SOUTH AFRICA ( ENQUIRY )

South Africa is the hottest new destination with temperate climate, comfortable overnight flights, and a favorable exchange rate. A vast and diverse country with miles of pristine coastline, searing hot desert and snow capped mountains. Johannesburg has one of the highest sunshine hours per annum than any other major city in the world.

  JOHANNESBURG

Johannesburg can seem overwhelming to the first-time visitor. With a relatively flat natural landscape and few natural landmarks, the city's suburbs and townships stretch as far as the eye can see. Most international visitors stick to the city's affluent northern suburbs, home to gleaming shopping malls, international hotel chains and the head offices of the country's leading economic players. The northern suburbs, en masse, can appear as an endless sprawl of little more than tree-lined streets, high walls and satellite dishes. In reality, the north is a series of little villages, each defined by its high street and a distinct personality. Norwood's Grant Avenue is a six-block strip lined with restaurants run and frequented by the city's Jewish and Italian-descended residents. Parkhurst's Fourth Avenue is a dining-and-decor street, favoured by the city's decorators and beau monde.

The high streets of Greenside (Greenway for foodies), Melville (Seventh Avenue for students), Parkview (Tyrone Avenue for genteel young families and pensioners) and Cyrildene (Derrick Avenue, home to Jozi's burgeoning Chinese community): each has its own distinct atmosphere and attractions. The most important thing to know? Jo'burg is Africa's most dynamic city; things literally change by the minute. The city has been completely rebuilt four times in just over a century. When an area goes 'down', the descent is rapid. So, for the time being, avoid any prior (pre-1999) suggestions to hit Rockey Street in Yeoville, often described as 'Jo'burg's Greenwich Village' - most of the bars, restaurants and clubs closed following a seemingly overnight influx of economic refugees from other parts of Africa. Likewise, Johannesburg's city centre has been 'off limits' for the past decade

There are many things that are unique to Johannesburg. It features a distinct street entrepreneurship, and motorists are able to buy almost anything from vendors selling goods at traffic lights. This includes food, umbrellas, soccer balls, cellular phone accessories and many other goods. Barber shops consisting of nothing but a chair and an enthusiastic barber can be found on the sides of roads, although they tend to specialize in African rather than Caucasoid hair. There are many craft markets in Johannesburg & surrounding areas. You will also find plenty of beautifully crafted beadwork & wirework being sold on the roadside & at intersections. Though you will be able to bargain with the locals, give a thought to the crafters who are often unemployed & rely on sales to support themselves & their family. Craftsmen and women from all over Africa sell their goods at the Rosebank flea market on Sundays and in a bazaar type shop in the Rosebank mall on week days. The shopping Malls in the northern suburbs of Sandton, Fourways etc. will appease even the most ardent shopping addict with every imaginable designer labels in its shops. However, a word of caution, prices can be pretty steep compared to Europe due to fluctuating exchange rates, so if you must shop look for bargains of which there are many all through the year..

With around 6 million trees, Johannesburg is most likely the world's largest man-made urban forest. The city is certainly one of the greenest in the world, considering that the natural landscape is savannah. Jo'burg is also the largest city in the world not on a coastline or major river. The weather is generally regarded as excellent, temperatures reach the mid-30s Celsius in summer with little to no wind and occasional spectacular afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures in winter can go into single digits but snow is extremely rare.

  DURBAN

Durban is blessed with balmy weather all year round, making it a perfect holiday paradise. The beachfront is bordered by five star hotels and luxury apartments, all of which have an idyllic view of the Indian Ocean. The Central Business District, a hive of activity, is within easy reach of all hotels and convention venues. If however, you wish to travel further afield, there is a very competent public transport system running throughout Durban, as well as an abundance of taxis. Durban is a major gateway to Africa and is also the largest and busiest port city on the continent. Due to this, there is an extensive road network leading to and from any destination in South Africa. Durban International Airport, is only a 10 minute drive from the City and is serviced daily by domestic flights, as well as international flights. Durban is a city in KwaZulu-Natal Province, South Africa. It is also known by the Zulu word eThekwini. Since 2000, a number of towns, including Durban, have been part of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality.

Durban is being marketed as "South Africa's Playground". It has a population of about 3.1 million people with diverse cultures including a large Indian community making Durban the second largest city in South Africa. While Johannesburg has embraced its new Afro-centric nature, and Cape Town has held on to its Euro-centric culture, Durban has emerged as an Ethno-centric city—a polyglot of Eastern, Western and African cultures, each of which give Durban a distinctly unique flavour. Durban is primarily a "holiday city"/beach resort, but at the same time is Africa's busiest container port and has a substantial industrial sector. The port is one of the world's largest natural deep water ports. The long continuous stretch of hotels that line the city's beachfront is known as Durban's Golden Mile. The Zulus called the almost land-locked lagoon "Thekwini" (lagoon) and used to set out elaborate fish traps in the shallows. On December 25, 1497, Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama anchored at present day Durban and named the natural harbour "Rio De Natal" (Christmas River). It was also called "Parva de Pescaria" (the fisheries) because of the fish traps.

In 1824, British traders and adventurers, Lieutenant Francis Farewell and Mr. Henry Flynn and their party left the Cape Colony in order to establish an ivory trading business in Natal. Later that year Nathaniel Isaacs went on a mission to rescue them, and together they established a trading post after land was granted to them by King Shaka of the Zulus, which they named Port Natal. The small settlement grew into a town and in 1835, Port Natal was renamed Durban in honor of then Cape Colony Governor, Sir Benjamin d’Urban. The Voortrekkers arrived over the Drakensberg mountains in 1838 and after a series of battles the Cape government built a fort. The area was finally annexed to the Cape Colony in 1844. In the late 1800s, the British shipped in thousands of indentured labourers from India and other Asian countries to work on the sugarcane fields. The Indian population has grown and is now the highest concentration of Indians outside of India.

  CAPE TOWN

Nestling in the shadow of the majestic table mountain between two oceans, Cape Town has a diversity in landscape, wildlife and culture that is unique. Its natural beauty combines with the bright lights of the city in a harmonious medley much like its peoples. The mountainous geography of the Cape Peninsula means that Cape Town has a wide variety of white sand beaches. Blouberg beach has the classic view of Table Mountain and is a world class spot for windsurfing and kite surfing between September and February. Boulders Beach is famous for its colony of penguins. The Cape Peninsula and the region around Cape Town offer many walking and hiking routes, with Table Mountain, Lion's Head and Devil's Peak set in the centre of the city, and the surrounding mountain ranges offering further opportunities. Boat trips to Robben Island are popular, and other cruises take tourists close to the population of thousands of Cape fur seals on Seal Island and Duiker Island.

Water sports and outdoor activities include surfing, diving, kite-surfing, sailing, angling, scenic drives, mountaineering, hiking, mountain-biking, kite-flying, hang-gliding and parasailing, boat trips, bird watching and whale watching. Whale watching is popular, with Southern Right Whales found off the coast during the breeding season (August to November), and Bryde's Whale occurring year-round. The nearby town of Hermanus is renowned for whales, as they often come within 100m of the shore, but they can also be seen in False Bay. Heaviside's Dolphin is endemic to the area and can be seen from the coast north of Cape Town. Dusky Dolphin occurs along the same coast, and may be seen from the ferry to Robben Island.

August and September are the best time to visit the Namaqualand region on the west coast of South Africa. After the winter rains, the desert comes to life and wild flowers bloom in profusion creating a vista of natural gardens as far as the eye can see in a spectacular show of nature's beauty. It's a place like no other on earth. You will be greeted by beautiful sunsets, crystal clear beaches, breathtaking vineyards, spectacular mountain ranges, exciting shopping opportunities, a vibrant nightlife and amazing people! Here at the southern tip of Africa, with its unique blend of cultures and sounds, the heartbeat of the African Continent is louder than anywhere else.
